BUFFALO, NY (Feb. 19) - The GW men's and women's swimming and diving teams are in sixth and third place, respectively after after Friday's second day of competition at the Verizon/Atlantic 10 Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at the Flickinger Aquatic Center. Massachusetts' men and the Richmond women are the leaders.
Massachusetts claimed victories in five of the eight events today. The Minutemen totaled 542 points while St. Bonaventure is in second place at 515. Fordham (270) is third followed by LaSalle (245) in fourth place, Rhode Island (231.5) in fifth, George Washington (227) in sixth, Xavier (189.5) in seventh and Duquesne (116) in eighth. Massachusetts junior Tommy Keane won the 400 IM posting a time of 4:00.71. Massachusetts junior Rob Bellamy won the 200 free in a time of 1:40.79. Massachusetts junior Ryan Zaucha won the 200 IM in a time of 1:51.4. Massachusetts sophomore Justin Houck won the 100 back with a time of 50.95. The relay team of freshman Dylan Smith, Zaucha, Bellamy and Keane won the 800 free relay in a time of 6:45.79. The St. Bonaventure relay team of senior Jason Poniatowski, junior Gary Payne, sophomore Morgan Hagerman and freshman Seth Johnson won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:32.26. St. Bonaventure junior Borut Poje won the 100 butterfly in a time of 49.76 while Payne took the 100 breaststroke in 58.26.
On the women's side, Richmond opened a 123.5-point lead over second place St. Bonaventure, which has 423.5 points. George Washington (314) is third followed by Massachusetts (302.5) in fourth, LaSalle (266) in fifth, Fordham (222) in sixth, Rhode Island (207) in seventh, Xavier (163.5) in eighth and Duquesne (94) is ninth.
Richmond claimed its third and fourth relay events of the championships, capturing the 200 medley and 800 free. The team of seniors Kristin Newkirk, Kristin Cavanah, Emily Pala and sophomore Mo Sabri captured the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:46.25. The relay team of junior Elizabeth Cook, freshman Mary Adams, sophomore Julie Waizenhofer and sophomore Casey Dluhos won the 800 free in 7:35.60. Newkirk also placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.23 while Adams set a new conference record in the 400 IM in a time of 4:22.05. Cook took the 200 free with a time of 1:51.89.
Massachusetts senior Becky Hunnewell won the 100 back in a time of 58.33. George Washington freshman Kirsten Rasmuson won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.13. La Salle senior Melanie Coots won the one-meter diving competition posting a score of 262.05.
