Women's Swimming Takes Third, Men Fifth at the Atlantic 10 Championships

BUFFALO, NY - The Women's and Men's Swimming and Diving teams left the three-day Atlantic 10 Championships successful in many team and individual events. The women's team finished third with a score of 459, behind Richmond (752) and St. Bonaventure (584) and before Massachusetts (433), La Salle (350), Fordham (316), Rhode Island (295), Xavier (268), and Duquesne (137). The men's team, consisting of only nine athletes, finished with a score of 373 in fifth place behind Massachusetts (838), St Bonaventure (748), Fordham (407), and La Salle (380) and before Rhode Island (332), Xavier (266) and Duquesne (151).

The Colonials managed to place in the top-five in twenty-four events of which nineteen times were their best of the season and one set a new school record. In the women's 200-yd freestyle relay and 200-yd medley relay and in both the men's and women's 400-yd medley relay and 400 and 800-yd freestyle relay, all were top-five times and marked the season's fastest with the exception of the women's 400-yd freestyle relay.

Individually, two Colonials grabbed first place finishes, as well as other top-five finishes. Sophomore Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Westminster Academy) took first in the 500-yd freestyle in 4:59.39, defending her A-10 title and swimming her new season best in that event. She also placed forth in the 200-yd freestyle with another season best time of 1:54.37 and set a new school record in the 200-yd backstroke when she finished third in 2:05.19. Fagley swam the last leg in the 800-yd freestyle relay contributing to the third place finish with a season best time of 7:47.13.

Kirsten Rasmuson (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel) finished first in the 100-yd breaststroke in 1:05.13, her new season best, while senior Nell Friar (Oak Ridge, TN/Oak Ridge), three-time A-10 Champ, was second (1:05.89). Rasmuson also grabbed second in the 200-yd breaststroke in 2:23.23 and swam in the 200-yd freestyle and medley relays where both teams marked GW's season fastest. Her 200-yd freestyle relay team swam to fifth place in 1:38.19, while her 200-yd medley relay team captured third in 1:48.16.

 

 

Two more school records were broken. Senior Jocelyn Finch (Olympia, WA/Olympia) broke her own school record in the 200-yd individual medley when she finished third in 2:06.47. She also swam to third place in both the 200-yd breaststroke (2:23.76) and 400-yd individual medley (4:30.77). Sophomore Ruth Dubyel (West Point, NY/James I. O'Neill) broke her own school record in the 100-yd butterfly with her time of :56.86 when she finished second. Dubyel also placed third in the 200-yd butterfly in 2:06.70.

The top finisher for the men, who finished in second place in the 400-yd individual medley with his season best of 4:00.96, was sophomore Andrew De Sorbo (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury). He also swam to third place in the 200-yd backstroke with his season's fastest time of 1:51.54. De Sorbo also contributed to the season best times and fifth place finish in the 400-yd medley relay (3:29.76), as well as forth place finish in the 400-yd freestyle relay (3:08.79).

Other top-five finishers for the Colonials include freshman Bryan Ferretti (Newtown, PA/Council Rock), sophomore Joshua Roberts (Memphis, TN/Gallatin) and Robert Stuart (Greenville, DE/Alexis I. DuPont), and juniors David Dillehay (Gallatin, TN/Gallatin) and Kelly Danylyshyn-Adams (La Jolla, CA/La Jolla)].
