Swimming and Diving Slips Past La Salle In Two Close Wins

Philadelphia, PA - The Colonials men's and women's swimming and diving teams were both victorious at La Salle, winning two close contests. The GW women (2-0) defeated the Explorers 125-117 and have won two straight dual meets after winning the Potomac Relays to start the season. GW's men (1-1) earned their first win with an exciting 122-121 final score. The Colonials won the first five and last five events of the meet to secure two excellent victories in the teams first Atlantic 10 competition. All four GW relay teams won to spark the wins.

Three of GW's women won two events to launch the Colonials past La Salle. Senior captain Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Westminster) doubled for the second straight meet finishing first in the 200-yd freestyle with a time of 1:55.94 followed by a time of 5:07.00 in the 500-yd freestyle. Junior Kirstin Rasmuson (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel) doubled, winning the 50-yd freestyle in a time of :25.35 and then winning the 200-yd breaststroke with a time of 2:26.41. Sophomore Maggie Moss (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) also doubled for the second straight meet when she won the 200-yd IM in a time of 2:09.72 and took the 200-yd backstroke in a time of 2:05.91, just three one-hundredths off of her season's best time. Moss also swam on the winning 400-yd medley relay team. Senior captain Crystal Freeman (Ft. Dix, NJ/Holy Cross) did earn a season-best time when she won the 1,000-yd freestyle in a time of 10:29.28 more than four seconds faster than her previous winning mark.

The men's exciting victory was led by the efforts of freshman Sean Flaherty (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) who won two events, taking first in the 1,000-yd freestyle in 9:46.25 and then winning the 500-yd freestyle in 4:44.24. Flaherty then helped lift GW over La Salle as part of the winning 400-yd freestyle relay team who won the final event of the meet. Freshman Jonathan Sabin (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) won the 200-yd backstroke for the second straight meet winning in 1:56.43. Sophomore Mark Adam (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) won his first event of the year completing the 200-yd breaststroke in a time of 2:11.84. Freshman diver Brian Waldman (North Andover, MA/North Andover) also won his first event of his collegiate career with 205.50 points in the three-meter dive.

 

 

The Colonials men's team will compete against Navy in Annapolis, MD this Wednesday at 5:00 pm. Both the men and the women will then compete against East Carolina and Duke at East Carolina on Saturday, November 15 at 2:00 pm.
