Sean Flaherty Named Rookie Of The Week By The Atlantic 10

Feb. 3, 2004

WASHINGTON DC - George Washington freshman swimmer Sean Flaherty (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week the conference has announced. Flaherty set the fastest time in the Atlantic 10 in the 1,000-yd freestyle in Saturday's meet against George Mason. His time of 9:37.87 puts him 99th in the NCAA Division I this season. This is Flaherty's second A-10 award of the year.

Flaherty took first place in the 1,000-yd in a conference-best time of 9:37.87. The freshman then added a first place finish in the 500-yd freestyle in a time of 4:42.53 against George Mason. Flaherty now has the top time in the Atlantic 10 in three freestyle events, the 500-yd, 1,000-yd, and 1,650-yd freestyles. The Colonials men's swimming and diving team lost to George Mason 141-100 on Saturday, January 31.

This is the second time this season that Flaherty has been named the A-10 Rookie of the Week. Flaherty won the award on November 10, 2003 after leading the Colonials men's team to an exciting one-point, 122-121, victory over La Salle. He did so with first place finishes in the 1,000-yd and 500-yd freestyle.

Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships in Buffalo, NY at the end of February. The three-day meet will take place Thursday-Saturday, February 19-21.
