Men's and Women's Swimming Get Off to Solid Starts at Potomac Relays

WASHINGTON, DC (October 13, 2000) The George Washington men's and women's swimming teams took a combined 14 first or second place finishes out of 19 events, to both finish in second place, respectively, on Friday, October 13 at the Potomac Relay Invite on the campus of Georgetown University.

On the men's side, senior Alvaro Fortuny (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Colegio Interamericano) turned in a brilliant performance in the 100-y breaststroke relay to combine with senior Mike Cottone (Piscataway, NJ/St. Joseph's) and freshman Joshua Roberts (Memphis, TN/White Station H.S.) for a second place finish. Fortuny, who qualified for the Guatemalen Olympic team, entered the pool in third place, but quickly overtook second place Georgetown and nearly caught the swimmer from event winner, American. The men's team finished with 82 points to finish second behind American.

Junior Nell Friar (Oak Ridge, TN/Oak Ridge H.S.) broke the pool record of 1:08.20, held by former GW standout Connie Shelton, in her leg of the 100-y breaststroke relay to highlight a successful day for the women's swimming team. Friar finished in 1:06.90. Juniors Stephanie Huff (Waterloo, IL/Cor Jesu Academy) and Laura Clemens (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley High) combined with freshman Ruth Dubyel (West Point, NY/James I. O'Neill H.S.) to win the 100-y backstroke relay in 3:02.95. The women also won the 500-y free relay as freshmen Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Westminster Academy) and Crystal Freeman (Ft. Dix, NJ/Holy Cross H.S.) made sparkling debuts finishing in 10:21.23. Also, Friar and sophomores Shauna McBrearty (Austin, TX/McCallum), Shannon Lynch (Medford, NJ/Lenape H.S.) and Ashley Orchard (Tamarac, FL/Pine Crest) were able to win the 200-y medley relay with a time of 1:51.86. The women finished with 92 points just behind American, which finished with 97.

GW's next meet is Saturday, October 28 as the teams host Duquesne on Alumni and Parents Day at the Smith Center starting at 12:00 p.m.
