Swimming and Diving's Moss and Flaherty Win A-10 Honors

Nov. 10, 2003

WASHINGTON DC - Two Colonials earned swimming awards from the Atlantic 10 the conference has announced. Sophomore Maggie Moss (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) was named the A-10 Performer of the Week while freshman Sean Flaherty (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) earned the Rookie of the Week award. Both led GW to victories over La Salle with the women winning 125-117 while the men edged out the Explorers 122-121.

Moss won two events for the second-straight meet when she won the 200-yd IM and 200-yd backstroke. Moss won the 200-yd backstroke in a time of 2:05.91, just three one-hundredths off of her Atlantic 10 leading season best time. Moss also has the second-fastest time in the A-10 this year in the 200-yd IM. She was just off of this time when she won the 200-yd IM in 2:09.72 against La Salle. Maggie also swam on the winning 400-yd medley relay team.

The men's exciting one-point victory over La Salle was led by the efforts of freshman Flaherty. He won two events, taking first in the 1,000-yd freestyle followed by a first-place finish in the 500-yd freestyle. He set an A-10 top time with his 9:46.25 1,000-yd freestyle. Later in the meet he eclipsed his Atlantic 10 leading time in the 500-yd freestyle by almost two seconds, winning the event with an impressive time of 4:44.24. Flaherty also swam on the 400-yd relay team which won the meet with a first place finish in the final event of the day against La Salle.

The GW women (2-0) defeated La Salle 125-117 for their second victory of the season and first in the Atlantic 10. The Women started the season by winning Potomac Relays on Saturday October 18. They defeated the field of seven and earned 114 points doubling the score of the second place team, George Mason who scored just 57.

The men's team (1-1) defeated La Salle in their first A-10 meet of the season. GW won by just one point in a close 122-121 victory. The men won the final five events to win their first meet of the season. GW won both relays and took first in seven events total, with freshman winning four events.

The Colonials men will meet Navy in Annapolis, MD on Wednesday at 5:00 pm. Both teams will then compete at East Carolina with Duke on Saturday, November 15 at 2:00 pm.
