Men's and Women's Swimming Perform Well at Nike Cup

Fortuny sets school record with win in the 100-yd breaststroke

CHAPEL HILL, NC (November 18, 2000) --- Senior Alvaro Fortuny (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Colegio Interamericano) led the George Washington University men's and women's swimming teams to an outstanding second day on Friday, November 17 at the Nike Cup on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

Fortuny, swimming against competition from some of the top-ranked teams in the country, showed why he was a member of the Guatemalan Olympic team at this past summer's Olympic Games. Fortuny set the school record with a time of :55.44 defeating Steve Gluck and Kevin Ayer of Louisiana State University.

Fortuny had been dominant in the breaststroke this year winning all of his heats against Duquesne, Virginia Tech, Navy and La Salle, but this was an opportunity to shine in the national spotlight. The senior did not disappoint and showed why he should be considered among the best in the country in the breaststroke.

Although Fortuny shined the brightest on Friday for the Colonials, many other swimmers had excellent showings. Freshman Andrew De Sorbo (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury H.S.) finished 20th out of 49 swimmers in the 400-yd individual medley with a time of 4:05.60. Senior Wes Teter (Farmer's Branch, TX/RL Turner H.S.) followed his classmate's strong showing with a great effort of his own. Teter finished 15th out of 56 swimmers in the 100-yd backstroke with a time of :51.91.

Freshman Ruth Dubyel (West Point, NY/James I. O'Neill H.S.) led the women's team on the second day. Dubyel finished 21st out of 93 swimmers in the 100-yd butterfly with a time of :58.46 and finished 25th out of 80 swimmers in the 100-yd backstroke with a time of 1:00.23. Junior Nell Friar (Oak Ridge, TN/Oak Ridge H.S.) also performed well in the 100-yd breaststroke finishing 13th out of 60 swimmers with a time of 1:06.25. Freshman Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Westminster Academy) also swam well finishing 28th out of 104 swimmers in the 200-yd freestyle with a time of 1:55.81.

The teams will look to complete a successful Nike Cup today, November 18 as the competition ends with sessions five and six.
