Men's Water Polo Finishes Strong At Navy Open

WASHINGTON, DC (September 2, 2001) - George Washington men's water polo started off this weekend on a low note, losing 13-4 to a talented University of Puerto Rico squad, but swept their final three matches to finish ninth overall at the Navy Open in Annapolis, MD.

After losing their opening match, the Colonials (3-1) regrouped and notched three victories to close the weekend. In their second match GW won an overtime battle against Navy B, 11-9. This victory set up their next match on Sunday against the US Merchant Marine Academy, which the Colonials won handily, 8-3. In their final match, GW took an early lead against MIT, and held off a late surge by the Beavers to win 8-7.

The Colonials were led by sophomore Pat Dodge who shot 63% over the four matches, scoring 12 goals and drawing 13 kick-outs. Sophomore keeper Chris Blick also enjoyed a solid weekend, notching 33 saves.

"They played great, and never backed down," said Coach Scott Reed, "they played a solid four quarters in each match, and that's all I could ask for."

The Colonials next travel to Lewisburg, PA to compete in the Bucknell Invitational from September 15-16th.
