The GW men’s water polo team opened its 2016 season with three games at the two-day Bruno Classic hosted by Brown University in Providence, R.I. After falling in a tightly contested game to No. 13 Brown, 12-11, on Saturday morning, the Colonials responded with a strong 13-6 victory over MIT in the evening. On Sunday, GW closed play with an 18-6 loss to No. 10 UC Davis.

Game 1 - No. 13 Brown 12, GW 11

In his collegiate debut, freshman Atakan Destici scored a game-high five goals while redshirt senior Bogdan Petkovic had three as the Colonials were edged by the host Bears. GW also received a pair of goals from freshman Andrew Mavis and one from Noah McKinnie.

The teams were tied 7-7 entering the fourth quarter and GW had back-to-back chances early on, but both shots on goal were stopped. Brown then notched two quick goals to go up 9-7 with 5:17 to play, before Destici drew the Colonials back within one at the 4:51 mark.

The Bears, however, again struck for two more goals to make it 11-8 with 3:35 left, and though Petkovic and Mavis scored to once more draw within one, Brown added an insurance goal and hung on for the 12-11 victory.

Game 2 - GW 13, MIT 6

After falling behind 4-3 following the first quarter, GW outscored MIT 6-0 in the second quarter to take a commanding 9-4 lead into halftime. The Colonials cruised from there, adding two goals in both the third and fourth quarters to complete a 13-6 win.

Destici followed up his impressive performance in game one with another three goals, and junior Pierce Deamer also had three. Petkovic and freshman Jordan Blosser added a pair of goals each, while Mavis, Quentin Montgomery and Zach Slaughter registered one.
