Men's Water Polo Splits Opening Day at Navy Open
Colonials Knock Off Mercyhurst, 8-6, in Second Game of Opening Day
Sept. 5, 2009
ANNAPOLIS, MD - Senior John-Claude Wright scored five goals to lift the George Washington men's water polo team to an 8-6 victory over Mercyhurst Saturday at the season-opening Navy Open in Annapolis, MD, Saturday evening.
Wright's five goals helped GW (1-1) erase a two goal halftime deficit and the victory against the CWPA West Division Lakers. The Colonials trailed by two goals following the first and second periods, but rallied to tie the game at 6-6 after three periods and blanked the Lakers in the fourth quarter en route to the two-goal win.
Freshman John Paul Bezerra scored the insurance goal in the fourth quarter and senior Rick Rogers and sophomore Cray Rogers added tallies. Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Sotolongo made eight saves and rookie Cameron Illes stopped four shots in the victory.
GW was overwhelmed by Concordia (CA), 18-6, in its season opener Saturday morning. The Colonials fell behind 4-0 after the first quarter and 11-1 at the half on way to the 12-goal loss. Wright and Cray Rogers scored two goals to lead the offense, followed by one goal from senior Nick Archambault and freshman Guy Helman, his first collegiate tally. Sotolongo made six stops, while Illes finished with five saves.
GW takes on No. 2 Stanford in Sunday's opener at 9:50 am, followed by its Navy Open finale against Queens (NY) at 2:30 pm.
