Tyner's Five-Meter Lifts Water Polo Over Iona, 12-11

Sept. 11, 2010

PRINCETON, NJ - Freshman Daniel Tyner continued his solid play by tallying five goals, including the game-winning five-meter penalty shot with 14 seconds remaining, to lift the George Washington men's water polo team to a 12-11 victory over Iona in its second game of the Princeton Invitational Saturday.

GW (3-3) opened the Princeton Invite with a 14-4 loss to 13th-ranked Santa Clara Saturday morning. The Colonials wrap play at the Invite Sunday against Fordham at 10:30 am, and Harvard at 3:00 pm.

GW trailed Iona 8-4 in the third quarter before a 5-0 run gave it a 9-8 lead entering the final eight minutes. The contest was tied at 11-11 late in the period until the Colonials gained possession and called timeout to set up a play. Tyner was able to draw an ejection and penalty shot with 14 seconds left on the ensuing possession and converted the five-meter attempt for the game-winning goal. Iona couldn't get a shot off in the final seconds to give GW a split on the day.

Tyner added two assists to finish with seven points and sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Illes made nine saves in the victory. Rookies Nate Little and Paul Deasey scored two goals apiece, followed by one goal from senior Peter Thomas, sophomore Guy Helman and freshman Luke Carrino. The Colonials were aided by converting 7-of-10 extra-man opportunities.

In Saturday's opener, GW trailed nationally ranked Santa Clara 3-1 after a quarter and 5-1 at the half, but surrendered nine fastbreak goals in the second half in the loss. Deasey led the offense with two goals, and Tyner and Helman each added one. Helman also added four steals. Illes finished with five saves, while sophomore Sean Joyce chipped in two stops in the second half.
