Men's Water Polo Drops League Opener at No. 12 Bucknell
Whittam Stops 14 Shots as Colonials Nearly Upset Bison
Sept. 16, 2007
LEWISBURG, PA - Three George Washington players scored two goals and senior goalkeeper Chris Whittam made 14 saves, but No. 12 Bucknell rallied in the second half to hand the Colonials men's water polo team a 7-6 loss in CWPA Southern Division action on Sunday afternoon.
Senior John Jennings, junior David Zenk and sophomore John-Claude Wright netted two goals apiece for GW (5-3, 0-1), which had its four-game winning streak snapped. The GW defense, led by Whittam, held a Bucknell offense averaging better than 12 goals per game to a season-low seven goals. Bucknell (8-1, 1-0) has won eight straight games.
The Colonials led 2-1 after the first quarter and 3-2 at halftime, but the Bison tied the game 5-5 after three periods and built a two-goal lead late in the fourth. GW twice had man-up opportunities late in the final quarter, but failed to convert. Zenk closed the margin to one goal with six seconds left.
GW continues CWPA Southern Division play at No. 15 Princeton next Sunday, Sept. 23, at 4:00 pm.
