Men's Water Polo Garners Saturday Split
Colonials beat Navy but fall to Bucknell
WASHINGTON - George Washington men's water polo split a pair of games Saturday to begin Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference play.
After a 17-12 road win over Navy to start the day, the 18th-ranked Colonials fell to No. 17 Bucknell, 12-9, in the nightcap before an energetic crowd at Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
After trailing Bucknell by four goals early in the fourth quarter, GW (7-5, 1-1 MAWPC) twice pulled within two down the stretch, but its rally came up short in a rematch of last season's conference tournament championship.
The Colonials close the weekend at home Sunday, hosting Fordham at 1 p.m.
Bucknell 12, GW 9: The Bison (6-6, 2-0) found separation in a back-and-forth battle with a five-goal third quarter. Marko Djordjevic's score with one second left in the period extended the visitors' lead to 9-5.
Boosted by the fans in its home debut, GW put together a spirited closing run. Andrew Mavis and Andras Levai both scored a pair of goals in the final quarter. It was a Mavis tally that got the Colonials within 11-9 with 2:51 left, but they didn't score again.
Sismanoglu recorded a team-high three goals in the loss, while Destici and Deamer both finished with a goal and an assist.
