#16 GW Men’s Water Polo Falls to #13 Bucknell, 16-11
Destici scores five goals; Colonials finish the weekend 2-1
WASHINGTON -- The 16th-ranked GW men’s water polo team dropped a hard-fought game with No. 13 Bucknell, 16-11, Sunday morning at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
The Colonials (5-4, 2-1 Mid-Atlantic Conference) were led by freshman Atakan Destici and redshirt senior Bogdan Petkovic, who combined for seven goals and five assists. After scoring 14 goals in two games on Saturday, Destici continued his scoring spree with another five against the Bison, while Petkovic tallied four assists and two goals.
Junior Pearce Deamer netted a pair of goals while sophomore Jack Kerwin and freshman Jordan Blosser added one apiece. Junior Duke Becker had a team-high four steals, and goalkeepers Matt Taylor (6) and Austin Pyrch (3) combined for nine saves.
GW opened the game with a flurry, needing just 11 seconds before Petkovic started the scoring. Just 28 seconds later Deamer struck to make it 2-0, before Bucknell responded with two goals of its own to tie it up. The teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the half, with the Bison holding a 5-4 lead after the first quarter and a 9-8 advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, Bucknell made it a two-goal advantage 20 seconds in, but Deamer drew GW within one a minute later. The Colonials were unable to score the equalizer, however, as play was scoreless over the next three minutes before Bucknell finished the quarter on a 3-1 run to make it 13-10. The Bison then outscored GW 3-1 in the fourth quarter to take the 16-11 victory.
The Colonials return to action next Sunday, when they head to New York to take on Fordham (11 a.m.) and Wagner (4 p.m.)
