GW Men's Water Polo Edged by Redlands, 12-11
Deamer, Dowd Tally Four Goals Each
Oct. 1, 2015
REDLANDS, Calif. -- Senior Jonah Dowd and sophomore Pierce Deamer each scored four goals, but the George Washington men's water polo team was edged by host University of Redlands on Thursday evening at the Bulldogs' Thompson Aquatic Center.
Freshman Brett Else put GW (2-10) on the board first, but Redlands (5-8) rattled off three in a row to take a 3-1 lead before Deamer scored his first of the game with three seconds remaining to make it 3-2 after one quarter.
Dowd quickly tied the game just three seconds into the second period, but another three straight goals by the Bulldogs gave the hosts a 6-3 lead until Dowd and Deamer went back-to-back over the final 90 seconds to make it 6-5 at halftime.
Sophomore Noah McKinnie Braun scored the equalizer early in the third frame, and the teams traded goals for the entire period, as Redlands maintained its one-goal lead at the end of three, 9-8.
Neither team found the back of the cage for more than five minutes to start the fourth quarter until Deamer again knotted the score at 9-9 with 2:47 to play. Each team scored once more and the game was tied, 10-10, with 1:25 left after Dowd's fourth goal of the game, but the Bulldogs tallied two in a row to take a 12-10 lead with 18 seconds remaining. Deamer scored three seconds later to bring the Colonials within one, but Redlands held on for the 12-11 win.
Deamer and Dowd led the Colonials with four goals apiece, while Braun chipped in two goals and two steals. Else scored GW's final goal and added five steals and four ejections drawn.
The Colonials return to action on Friday, when they face Chapman (2:20 p.m. ET) and Cal Lutheran (6:20 p.m. ET) on the first day of the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament at Axelrood Pool on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
