Oct. 5, 2006

CLAREMONT, CA - Senior John Hornberger and sophomore Gustavo Canto each recorded hat tricks, but the George Washington men's water polo team lost, 12-9, to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in its first of seven games in four days on the West Coast late Wednesday.

GW (6-7) fell below .500 for the first time this season with its fifth consecutive loss. CMS, which is ranked ninth in the CWPA Division III poll, improves to 2-9.

The Colonials' recent first-half struggles continued as they were shutout, 2-0, in the first quarter and trailed the Stags, 8-5, at halftime. GW converted just 9-of-26 shots (34.6 percent), well below its season average of better than 50 percent (119-of-209, 55 percent entering Tuesday's game at Navy).

Freshman Nick Archambault added two goals and sophomore David Zenk scored one goal.

The Colonials play a doubleheader at California Baptist's Lancer Aquatic Center on Thursday. GW will battle the host Lancers, the nation's 20th-ranked team, at 3:00 pm EDT and Occidental at 6:00 pm EDT.
