#16 GW Men's Water Polo Tops #9 Bucknell, 10-9
Braun scores the game-winner with three seconds to play
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The No. 16 George Washington men's water polo team used a six-goal fourth quarter including the game-winning score from Noah McKinnie Braun with three seconds play to take a 10-9 win over No. 9 Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonials trailed 6-4 heading to the fourth quarter, but stormed back to avenge a home loss to the Bison two weeks ago. On the game winner, redshirt senior Bogdan Petkovic threw a full court pass to Braun, who finished for GW's second win over a ranked team this season.
The goal capped a hectic final minute-plus of the game that saw GW tie it, 8-8, on junior Pierce Deamer's score with 1:25 left, before Bucknell retook the lead with 39 seconds to play. GW again tied it up, 9-9, when freshman Atakan Destici scored one of his two fourth quarter goals with 24 seconds to play, setting up the dramatic finish.
Petkovic helped lead GW to the victory, tallying four goals, two assists, a steal and a field block, while senior goalkeeper Matt Taylor turned in 15 saves and a team-high five steals. With the win, GW improved to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the Mid-Atlantic Conference, while Bucknell dropped to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.
GW, which trailed the first three quarters, used a goal from Petkovic early in the fourth quarter to draw within one at 6-5. Bucknell extended it back to a two-goal lead two minutes later and the teams exchanged the next two goals before the Colonials tied it up 8-8 with 1:25 to play.
GW is back in action on Sunday with matches at No. 13 Princeton (11 a.m.) and vs. La Salle (2 p.m.).
