GW Men's Water Polo Comeback Bid Falters in 14-8 Loss to No. 14 Navy
Oct. 10, 2012
WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's water polo team got off to a slow start offensively, and the Colonials could not pull themselves out of an early four-goal deficit, falling to No. 14 Navy, 14-8, on Wednesday evening in CWPA Southern Division action at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
Navy (17-2, 3-1 Southern) led, 4-0, at the end of the first quarter before GW freshman Bogdan Petkovic put the Colonials on the scoreboard for the first time 31 seconds into the second period. The Midshipmen responded with three straight goals to take a six-goal lead, 7-1, but graduate student Milos Purkovic scored with 34 seconds left in the half to give GW the momentum going into the break as Navy led, 7-2, at halftime.
The Colonials (9-10, 1-3 Southern) outscored the Mids, 3-1, in the third quarter to pull within three goals, 8-5. After neither team could find the back of the cage for nearly four minutes, Purkovic got the scoring started for GW at 4:12. Navy's Jesse Walker briefly interrupted GW's run at 3:10, but Purkovic completed his hat trick just 15 seconds later, and Petkovic made it two straight for the Colonials with 58 seconds left in the quarter.
However, the fourth period was all Navy, as the Midshipmen opened the quarter with four straight to take a game-high seven-goal lead, 12-5, after just 1:55 of action. The Colonials scored three of the next four goals to pull back within five, 13-8, but they could get no closer, and a penalty goal by Navy's Thomas Patterson with 2:33 left sealed the Mids' 14-8 win.
Purkovic and Petkovic each tallied three goals to lead GW offensively, and Petkovic added seven steals, two ejections drawn and an assist. Patterson led the Midshipmen with four goals.
GW senior goalkeeper Cameron Illes recorded eight saves in the game.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday, when they visit Southern Division rival Bucknell at 1 p.m.
