Men's Water Polo Drops Pair at Harvard Invitational
Colonials battled two ranked foes Saturday
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - George Washington men's water polo dropped both its games at the Harvard Invitational on Saturday to ranked opponents.
GW fell to No. 11 Princeton, 13-7, to open the day at Blodgett Pool before a 12-11 loss to No. 12 St. Francis Brooklyn in the evening. Atakan Destici, Andrew Mavis and Zach Slaughter each accounted for three goals over the two games to pace the Colonials (10-10).
Princeton 13, GW 7: The Colonials weren't able to build off a strong start. After netting four goals in the opening quarter, they scored just three more the rest of the way.
Princeton (16-4) went ahead for good at 6-5 on Matt Payne's goal with 3:10 left in the first half and continued to extend the lead after the break.
Vaios Vlahotasios went the distance in net for the Colonials, posting eight saves.
St. Francis Brooklyn 12, GW 11: The Colonials led by a goal through three quarters but couldn't close out the victory.
The Terriers (8-5) came out on top in a back-and-forth final quarter. Bogdan Kostic scored to put them up 11-10 with 1:38 left and then quickly added another goal.
Slaughter scored with seven seconds remaining to cut GW's deficit back to a goal, but St. Francis Brooklyn was able to run out the clock.
Slaughter scored three times with Destici adding two goals and three assists. Mavis also scored twice and drew four ejections.
Austin Pyrch came up with 11 saves against the Terriers, who are atop the Northeast Water Polo Conference standings. Levai helped the defensive effort with five steals.
UP NEXT: GW closes the Harvard Invitational on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against the host Crimson. It's their third meeting of the season.
