Men's Water Polo Places Fifth At CWPA Inter-Regional Competition

PRINCETON, NJ (Oct. 21) - George Washington men's water polo completed a solid weekend of play with a 8-6 victory over number two seed Slippery Rock to seize fifth place in the Collegiate Water Polo Crossover Weekend and complete a 3-1 two-day record at Princeton University.

The Colonials (6-11), the number nine seed of eleven, faced the number five seed Bucknell University on Saturday, Oct. 20 in the first match of the day. GW was barely edged out by the Bison 9-8 in a marathon, triple, sudden-death overtime match.

GW would rebound in their next match of the day at 12:30 p.m. against Washington & Jefferson College. Sophomore Patrick Dodge led the Colonials with four goals as GW topped the number four seed 9-6. The Colonials' victory was keyed by a defensive stand in the third period, holding the Presidents scoreless, and in turn netting three goals to take the lead.

In their third match of the day, GW blasted number eight seed Grove City College out of the water with a 17-6 runaway victory. The Colonials won with a balanced attack, with three players scoring three goals apiece. Sophomore Dodge and seniors Spencer Hugret and Kevin Norman paced GW against the Wolverines.

On Sunday, GW faced Slippery Rock in a match to decide fifth place. The match went to the wire with the teams tied 4-4 heading into the final quarter. Senior Josh Gimpleson scored two goals in the fourth quarter to give GW the lead and win as the Colonials held the Rockets to two scores.

Despite their solid play, GW's finish established them as the fifth seed in the Southern Division Championship on Nov. 2-4.
