Men's Water Polo Drops Navy on Senior Day
GW closed strong to finish weekend sweep
WASHINGTON - George Washington men's water polo used a run of eight straight goals in the second half to rally past Navy, 16-14, on Saturday at Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
Atakan Destici scored three of his team-high five goals in the burst that turned a four-goal deficit into a four-goal lead and sent the Colonials on the way to a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference victory on Senior Day.
GW (12-11, 5-3 MAWPC) trailed 12-8 on Andrew Shashin's goal with 3:49 left in the third quarter. That's when the Colonials hit their stride. They managed to tie it up at 12 on a score by Andrew Mavis with 26 seconds remaining in the third and take the lead for good on Destici's power play goal to open the final quarter. A Mavis goal with 2:59 left stretched the advantage to 16-12.
Navy (8-12, 1-6) made a final push. The Midshipmen scored back-to-back goals and then had a chance to draw even closer in the final minute. GW's Vaios Vlahotasios ended that threat with the last of his seven saves.
Destici piled up another impressive stat line, adding four assists and two steals. Mavis continued to be an offensive catalyst by scoring four goals and drawing four ejections.
It was the second straight day GW closed strong for a home victory. The Colonials followed a similar formula to beat Johns Hopkins on Friday. For the weekend, they outscored their opponents, 19-9, after halftime.
UP NEXT: GW has a break next weekend before closing the regular season Nov. 4 with a road conference doubleheader at Fordham and Wagner.
