GW Men's Water Polo Splits Crossover Contests With Iona and Fordham
Oct. 22, 2011
PRINCETON, N.J. - The George Washington men's water polo team rebounded from a 10-4 loss to Iona in its first game to defeat Fordham, 12-10, later in the day in a pair of CWPA Divisional crossover contests at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool on Saturday. Saturday morning's opening game saw GW get outscored 4-0 in the second quarter and 2-0 in the fourth quarter as CWPA Northern Division foe Iona (9-10) snapped a 10-game losing streak in their series dating back to 2004. The Colonials and Gaels were even at 2-2 through eight minutes, but Iona surged ahead with a four-goal run in the second stanza and never looked back. GW struggled on the offensive end as top attackers Nate Little and Paul Deasey combined to shoot 2-for-20 and the Colonials converted just 1-of-8 man-up opportunities. Little netted two goals, freshmen Ridvan Pehlivan and Brian Mojica added one apiece, and junior goalkeeper Cameron Illes made 10 saves. GW responded well to the loss, jumping out to leads of 4-1 after a quarter and 8-3 at halftime before holding on for the 12-10 victory over Northern Division rival Fordham (6-18). Little pumped in a game-high five goals, while Pehlivan, Deasey and junior Guy Helman contributed two goals apiece. Mojica chipped in a goal, two assists and four steals. Illes finished with 13 saves. GW (9-15, 2-5 CWPA Southern Division) completes regular-season play with its final CWPA Southern Division contest of the year at nationally ranked Navy Saturday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. The Colonials will then await seeding for the CWPA Southern Division Championship, hosted at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool Nov. 4-6.
