GW Men’s Water Polo Topped by San Jose State, 12-7
Colonials return to action Sunday vs. #9 UC Davis
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The No. 14 GW men’s water polo team dropped a 12-7 decision to San Jose State on day two of the Rodeo Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonials (10-7) were led by freshmen Atakan Destici and Andrew Mavis, who each tallied a pair of goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Matt Taylor who had 14 saves, but were unable to overcome a strong second half from the Spartans (6-13).
Following the second half the teams were tied, 3-3, but San Jose State took control by outscoring GW 4-1 in the third quarter. Pierce Deamer accounted for the lone Colonials goal in the stanza, tying it up 4-4, but the Spartans closed the period on a 3-0 run.
In the fourth, GW received goals from Destici, Mavis and Jordan Blosser, but San Jose State countered with five of its own for the 12-7 final.
The Colonials play their fourth game in four days on Sunday when they take on ninth-ranked UC Davis at 4:20 p.m. ET.
