GW Men's Water Polo Falls to Navy, 19-15, on Senior Night
Pehlivan, Petkovic Score Five Goals Apiece
Oct. 25, 2014Ridvan Pehlivan and junior Bogdan Petkovic scored five goals apiece, but the George Washington men's water polo team fell to CWPA Southern Division rival Navy, 19-15, on Senior Night at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool on Saturday evening.
GW (9-10, 1-6 Southern) led 4-2 midway through the first quarter, but Navy (11-10, 2-4 Southern) scored three of the final four goals of the period to tie the game at 5-5 after one. Pehlivan scored three of the Colonials' five goals in the period.
After the Midshipmen took their first lead of the night with the first goal of the second quarter, Petkovic scored back-to-back markers to put GW back on top, 7-6, at the 6:01 mark. Navy, however, tallied five unanswered goals to end the half and take an 11-7 lead at the break.
The teams alternated the first four goals of the third quarter, with Pehlivan scoring twice for GW, but the Midshipmen again scored the final two goals of the frame to go up, 15-9.
Petkovic opened the fourth quarter with his fourth goal of the night before Navy scored twice to take a game-high seven-goal lead, 17-10. The Colonials, however, answered with three in a row to pull within four, 17-13, with 2:34 remaining. The Midshipmen scored two more, but GW tallied the final two goals of the game for the 19-15 final margin.
Pehlivan and Petkovic each added two assists and finished with a team-best seven points apiece, while senior Brian Mojica notched a hat trick and added two helpers for five points. Petkovic also recorded a team-high five steals. Junior Connor Dillon and sophomore Sander Profaci split time in goal with Dillon making seven saves and Profaci stopping two shots.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, when they visit Navy for a 1 p.m. rematch in Annapolis, Md.
