SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The No. 14 GW men’s water polo team concluded its California road trip on Monday evening, falling in overtime to No. 20 Santa Clara, 12-11.

GW, playing for the fifth time in as many days, overcame a one-goal deficit after three quarters and took an 11-10 lead with 28 seconds to play when Jack Kerwin scored on an assist from Zach Slaughter. Santa Clara, however, would answer just 15 seconds later when Mac Carey, after initially being turned away by goalkeeper Matt Taylor, found the back of the next on a second attempt to send it to overtime.

Carey would also help provide the game-winning goal in the second three-minute overtime, when he found DeMarco Orella who fired it into the net with 1:40 remaining. The Colonials were unable to get the equalizer from there as they fell to 10-9 on the season.

Pierce Deamer led GW with five goals on the evening, while Atakan Destici and Duke Becker had two apiece and Jordan Blosser added one. Taylor was credited with 14 saves.

GW outshot Santa Clara (10-11), 39-34, in a game that featured 28 ejections and four yellow cards. The Colonials were 4-for-8 on power plays while limiting the Broncos to a 3-for-13 effort.

GW now returns home for Alumni Weekend and a pair of Mid-Atlantic Division contests vs. Johns Hopkins (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Navy (Saturday, 3 p.m.). At 5-1 in league play, the Colonials are just a half-game behind first-place Bucknell, which is 6-1.
