Men's Water Polo Swept at Air Force Invite

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - George Washington men's water polo faced some tough competition during their trip out West, dropping four matches at the Air Force Invite.
The Colonials (4-16) faced Cal Baptist in their opening match of the tournament on Saturday, Oct. 26. After battling to a 3-3 tie after one quarter, Cal Baptist outscored GW 16-2 over the final three periods to beat the Colonials 19-5.
GW rebounded for a strong showing against UC Davis in their second match of the day. After falling behind 3-1 after the first quarter, the Colonials cut the lead to one score in the second period, trailing 3-4 at the break. However, GW would be unable to get any closer despite holding UC Davis to only three second-half scores, and lost a close match 6-4.
On Sunday, Oct. 27, GW began the day with an early match versus their hosts, the Air Force Academy. GW, who fell behind early, trailing 3-7 after one quarter and 4-11 by the half, were unable to catch Air Force despite a strong fourth quarter in which outscored their opponent 3-1. The Colonials dropped their third match of the tournament, 12-7.
In their final match of the weekend, GW faced UC Santa Cruz. The Colonials dug themselves an early hole, falling behind 7-0 before recording their first goal in the second quarter. GW matched Santa Cruz goal-for-goal for the remainder of the match, and fell 11-4.
Pat Dodge, who scored four goals on the weekend, was named to the Air force Invite All-Tournament First Team for his strong play for the Colonials. The Colonials return to action on November 1, when they compete in the Southern Division Championships in Princeton, NJ as the sixth seed.
