#17 GW Men’s Water Polo Holds off Johns Hopkins, 12-11
Colonials improve to 6-1 in league play in Senior Night
WASHINGTON -- On Senior Night at the Charles E. Smith Center pool, Bogdan Petkovic helped lead the 17th-ranked GW men’s water polo team to a 12-11 victory over Johns Hopkins with a four-goal, four-assist outing.
Petkovic, a redshirt senior who is the school’s all-time steals leader while ranking fifth in goals scored, was honored prior to the game with classmates Dennis Gut, Alex Swart and Sander Profaci. He then helped the Colonials snap a four-game losing streak to the Blue Jays, adding three steals, two ejections drawn and a field block to go along with his four goals and four assists.
With the win, the Colonials improved to 11-9 overall and 6-1 in league play, moving into a first-place tie with Bucknell. GW can take the outright division lead with a victory over Navy Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Smith Center.
The Colonials led throughout, with Mavis scoring two goals in the first quarter and Deamer and Petkovic accounting for one each to make it 4-2 GW. Mavis struck for two more goals in the second quarter and Becker fired a shot into the net 29 seconds before halftime to give the Colonials a 7-4 advantage.
After both teams scored twice in the third quarter, Johns Hopkins made a run in the fourth. The Blue Jays cut GW’s lead to 9-8 on Matt Fraser’s goal with 5:19 left, but Petkovic answered less than a minute later which spurred a 3-0 Colonials run as Kerwin and Deamer scored at the 3:35 and 2:44 marks.
The Blue Jays, however, countered with a 3-0 run of their own and made it 12-11 on Fraser’s goal with 34 seconds remaining. GW was able to run out the clock from there and preserve the win, extending their division winning streak to four games.
