Hornberger Concludes Standout Season, Career
Oct. 29, 2006
LEWISBURG, PA - The George Washington men's water polo team closed its 2006 season with a 20-10 thrashing of Gannon in the fifth place game of the CWPA Southern Championships at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, PA, on Sunday.
GW ends the season with a 14-12 overall record, the most victories for the program since Scott Reed took over the program in 1999. Senior John Hornberger scored two of GW's season-high 20 goals to finish his career with 166 goals.
The Colonials jumped ahead of the Golden Knights 6-0 after the first quarter, 12-3 at halftime, and never looked back. Sophomore Gustavo Canto tallied a career-high seven goals and classmate David Zenk registered eight points on two goals and six assists. Junior John Jennings added a hat trick and junior goalkeeper Chris Whittam made 12 saves.
The fifth place finish at the Southern Championships is GW's best since the 2002 team also placed fifth at the event.
