Colonials Go 1-2 Saturday, Prepare for CWPA Southern Division Championship Next Weekend
Oct. 30, 2010
ANNAPOLIS, MD - The George Washington men's water polo team completed regular-season play with a non-league victory over Salem International and a pair of CWPA Southern Division, East Region losses to No. 15 Navy and Johns Hopkins at Navy's Lejeune Hall Saturday.
GW finishes the regular season 8-18 overall and 1-7 in the CWPA South's East Region. The Colonials now await seeding for next weekend's CWPA Southern Division Championship, which includes teams from the CWPA South's West Region, at Lejeune Hall.
Freshmen Nate Little and Daniel Tyner scored four goals apiece, but it wasn't enough as GW fell behind nationally ranked Navy 13-4 at halftime en route to a 22-9 loss in Saturday's opening game. Rookie Luke Carrino added the Colonials' other goal, while sophomore goalkeepers Cameron Illes (four) and Sean Joyce (one) combined for five saves.
A late added contest, GW cruised to a 10-1 triumph over Salem International in Saturday's second game. The Colonials led 6-1 after a quarter, added four more in the second and blanked the Tigers the final 16 minutes. Freshman Jason Veris netted a season-high five goals and Illes came out of goal to tally two goals and an assist in the one-sided victory.
Sophomore John Paul Bezerra added two goals, two assists, two steals, two field blocks and two swim-offs, and Joyce stopped six shots.
In Saturday's regular-season finale, Little matched a season-high with six goals, including four ejection strikes, an assist and two ejections drawn in a 15-9 loss to Hopkins. Bezerra chipped in three points and four ejections drawn and Carrino recorded four points.
