#18 Men's Water Polo Closes Regular Season with Win at Navy
The Colonials finished conference play with an 8-2 mark
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 18th-ranked GW men's water polo team closed regular season play in winning fashion with a 13-9 victory at Navy on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Colonials finished play in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) with an 8-2 mark, eclipsing the number of league victories they totaled in the previous five years combined. GW takes a 13-10 overall record and will likely be the number 1 or 2 seed in the MAWPC Championship which gets underway Nov. 18 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
In the win over Navy (7-16, 2-8 MAWPC), freshman Atakan Destici led the way with a game-high five goals while junior Pierce Deamer had four. Freshman Andrew Mavis added three and redshirt senior Bogdan Petkovic had one.
The fourth quarter proved to be the difference as GW closed with a flurry, outscoring the hosts 5-1. Destici started a 4-0 run with a strike at the 6:36 mark, followed by Mavis 1:08 later. Just 20 seconds after Mavis' goal, Destici scored again to make it a comfortable 11-8 advantage. Mavis would score his third and final goal of the game with 2:04 to play, and though Navy finally answered with 1:51 remaining, Destici answered at the 0:58 mark to provide the final margin.
GW led for much of the game, taking a 3-1 advantage after the first quarter and a 6-4 lead at halftime. Navy battled back in the third, knotting it up 6-6 before the teams traded the next four goals to go into the fourth deadlocked 8-8.
The Colonials now await the schedule for the MAWPC Championship, which will be hosted by Bucknell from Nov. 18-20.
