Colonials to Face Washington & Jefferson for Fifth Place on Sunday
Nov. 7, 2015
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Three Colonials notched hat tricks as the fifth-seeded George Washington men's water polo team defeated eighth-seeded Gannon, 16-7, on Saturday evening at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championship at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
GW will take on No. 7 seed Washington & Jefferson on Sunday at 11:40 a.m. in the Southern Division Championship fifth-place game. The winner will earn an automatic bid to the CWPA Championship, which takes place from Nov. 20-22 at MIT.
Senior Jonah Dowd and sophomores Duke Becker and Noah McKinnie Braun each notched hat tricks to pace the Colonials against the Golden Knights, while sophomore Quentin Montgomery and freshman James McLean both scored twice.
The teams traded goals in the first quarter, and the game was tied, 2-2, after one. Each side tallied once to start the second period, and the score was knotted at 3-3 with 6:23 remaining. GW then rattled off four straight goals to take a 7-3 lead at the break.
The Colonials extended their run to 8-0 with the first four goals of the third stanza for a commanding 11-3 advantage, though Gannon ended its drought at the 1:32 mark to make it 11-4 after three periods. GW then scored four of the first five goals of the fourth quarter for a game-high 10-goal lead, 15-5. The Golden Knights ended the contest with two of the final three goals to account for the 16-7 final margin.
