GW Men's Water Polo Takes Fifth at Southerns
Colonials Earn Automatic Bid to CWPA Championship With 14-9 Win Over Washington & Jefferson
Nov. 8, 2015
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The fifth-seeded George Washington men's water polo team placed fifth at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championship with a 14-9 win over seventh-seeded Washington & Jefferson on Sunday afternoon at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
With the win, GW (7-20) earns an automatic bid to the CWPA Championship, which takes place from Nov. 20-22 at MIT.
Sophomore Duke Becker posted his second hat trick in as many games and added a pair of steals to pace the Colonials. Freshman Jack Kerwin and Zach Slaughter each tallied three points on two goals and an assist, and Slaughter added two ejections drawn. Senior goalkeeper Connor Dillon and freshman Matt Taylor combined for 10 saves in the cage.
GW blanked Washington & Jefferson, 5-0, in the first quarter, as Becker scored all three of his goals in the opening period. The Colonials extended their lead to 8-0 before the Presidents finally got on the board with 43 seconds left in the second quarter. A goal by sophomore Quenty Montgomery with 18 seconds to go gave GW a 9-1 halftime advantage.
The teams alternated scores in the third period, with the Colonials taking a game-high nine-goal lead on three occasions, including 13-4 at the end of the frame. The Presidents rallied with a 5-1 fourth quarter but could not make up the difference as GW held on for the 14-9 victory.
