Men's Water Polo Tops Mercyhurst for Fifth Place at Southerns

Nov. 9, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ - Redshirt senior Nick Eddy scored four goals in his final collegiate game and rookie Alex Sotolongo capped his first season with 14 saves as the George Washington men's water polo team topped Mercyhurst, 9-8, in the fifth-place game of the CWPA Southern Division Championship Sunday afternoon.

Seventh-seeded GW (11-20) avenged a one-goal loss to Mercyhurst in early September with Sunday's triumph, which came down to the Colonials withstanding the fourth-seeded Lakers' late game-tying attempt.

GW overcame a 5-4 halftime deficit to lead by one, 7-6, after three quarters and held on for the victory, its third straight and fourth in five games at Southerns.

Eddy's four goals brought his team-leading season total to 66 and career total to 187, good for eighth all-time in GW program history. Junior John-Claude Wright scored a hat trick for the third time in five games at Southerns, followed by one goal apiece from sophomore Nick Yeager and freshman Dan Alessandri.

Freshman goalkeeper Alex Sotolongo finished with double-digit saves for the second straight game with 14. He wraps his rookie season with 228 saves.

The fifth-place finish is GW's fifth in nine all-time appearances in the Southern Division Championship.
