CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The George Washington men's water polo team defeated Washington & Jefferson, 14-11, on Saturday afternoon on day two of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship at MIT's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center/Alumni Pool.
Freshmen Brett Else and Zach Slaughter, sophomores Quentin Montgomery and Joe Behun and senior Jonah Dowd each tallied two goals for the Colonials (8-21), while Dowd earned CWPA Player of the Game by adding four steals.
Washington & Jefferson (11-13) scored the first goal of the game, but the Colonials answered with a man-up goal by Slaughter to tie the contest at 1-1. Sophomore Pierce Deamer then put his own rebound into the net, and Dowd posted his first of the bout to give GW a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Colonials came out strong in the second quarter, outscoring Washington & Jefferson, 5-3, as the squads exchanged three goals apiece before the Buff and Blue wrapped the half with a 3-0 run on Else's power play goal, Montgomery's second score of the stanza and Dowd's first to take an 8-4 lead at the half.
Washington & Jefferson played tough in the third, outscoring the Colonials, 3-2, in the period as Behun tallied his second score and junior Alex Swart posted his first for GW.
GW's 10-7 lead after three periods proved crucial for the Colonials, as Washington & Jefferson matched the Buff and Blue's four goals in the final quarter of play. Back-to-back goals by sophomore Noah McKinnie Braun and Else after W&J opened the period with a goal kept the Colonials ahead as the squads exchanged goals until time expired, and GW came out on top, 14-11.
With the victory, the Colonials will take on Fordham (19-15) on Sunday at 10:20 a.m. to play for ninth place.
