Women's Water Polo Falls in Inaugural Match, 11-10, to Maryland

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 16, 2000) GW's Heather Walenga scored a team-high five goals but GW's late rally fell short as they dropped an 11-10 decision to Maryland in the Colonials' inaugural women's water polo match at GW's Smith Center. The match marked the first GW women's water polo match since the sport was elevated to varsity status beginning with the 2000 season.

GW rallied from a 7-4 deficit at the half and threatened to tie the match in the final two minutes.

Walenga, a junior from Rockville, MD, transferred to GW from the University of Maryland where women's water polo is a club.

Freshman Kiersten Johnson scored three goals for GW. Defensively, Danielle Cormier recorded three steals for the Colonials.

We played fantastic, said GW head coach Scott Reed. The women are really just learning to play together for the first time in a pressure situation and they never gave up. We were a little nervous and tentative at the beginning and just came up a little short

Maryland's Marcy Souza, wife of former GW men's water polo standout, Glauco Souza, led the Terrapins with five goals.

The Colonials' next meet is at Maryland on Feb. 20 at College Park beginning at 8:00 p.m. before competing in the Princeton Invitational, Feb. 26-27, in New Jersey.
