Women's Water Polo Take Three of Four in CWPA Tournament

WASHINGTON, DC (March 26) - GW women's water polo secured the third seed in the upcoming Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Championships with an excellent showing this past weekend at the second CWPA weekend in Lewisburg, PA.

The Colonials (10-6, 6-2) triumphed over all three teams they faced on Saturday, March 24, relying on their excellent conditioning in order to win. After cruising to a 14-7 victory over Salem International University in their first match of the day at 10:30 am, the Colonials were slated to face Bucknell at 1:30 pm in the Bison's first match of the day.

Bucknell and GW battled through three periods, knotted in a 5-5 tie heading into the final frame. The Colonials would get their second wind, and outscore the Bison 6-3 to close out the match, and take the victory 11-8. Senior co-captain Heather Walenga and freshman Mia Fabian scored two goals apiece in the fourth period to spark the GW surge.

GW would also top Villanova in their evening match, 10-7. The Colonials were led by sophomore Ashley Pyka's three goals. After the Wildcats fought back to tie the match at 5-5 by half, GW would blow open the contest in the third, outscoring Villanova 4-1, and seizing the lead for good.

GW played their final match of the tournament against Princeton on Sunday, March 25. The Colonials would drop their only contest on the weekend, 13-3 being unable to muster any offense against the tough No. 19 Tigers.

With the strong showing by the Colonials at the tournament, GW finished second in their division and secured the third seed in the upcoming Southern Championships on April 6-7 in Grove City, PA. The Colonials will find out this week if they will also receive an at-large bid to this weekend's ECAC Championships in Princeton, NJ.
