Men's Water Polo Receives Preseason National Ranking

Aug. 25, 2008

BRIDGEPORT, PA - The George Washington men's water polo team is ranked No. 18 in the preseason Varsity Top 20 poll released by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Aug. 20. The Colonials also were picked fifth in the preseason CWPA poll.

GW is one of five CWPA programs ranked in the nation's Top 20, trailing No. 10 Navy and No. 12 St. Francis-NY and ahead of No. 19 Brown and No. 20 Princeton.

The Colonials return four starters and 12 letterwinners from last year's team which finished third at the CWPA Eastern Championship and ranked No. 17 in the final Varsity Top 20 poll and third in the CWPA poll. GW finished last season 12-18 overall, with three victories against Top 20 foes and 11 losses by two goals or less to Top 20 teams.

Senior David Zenk, an honorable mention All-American in 2007, leads the list of returnees after pacing the Colonials with 94 points and 43 assists last fall. Seniors Nick Eddy (49g/25a) and Sergei Shev (8g/13a) and junior John-Claude Wright (55g/15a) also return to the starting lineup.

GW opens the 2008 season at the Navy Open in Annapolis, MD, Aug. 6 and 7.
