Hornberger Named CWPA Co-Player of the Week

Sept. 6, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University men's water polo senior John Hornberger was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division, Eastern Region Co-Player of the Week after leading the Colonials to the best start in program history last weekend.

Hornberger scored 14 goals in guiding GW to a perfect 4-0 mark at the Navy Labor Day Open, including a career-high tying six tallies versus No. 18 Santa Clara on Sunday. He recorded a pair of hat tricks and totaled 10 points in victories over Gannon and MIT on Saturday, and added four points on two goals and two assists in the Open finale versus Iona on Sunday. The Texan also posted a team-best eight ejections drawn in the four-game span.

The Colonials moved three spots to No. 7 in the latest CWPA Top 10 poll. The top five teams in the CWPA (Navy, St. Francis (NY), Princeton, Bucknell, Johns Hopkins) are all ranked in the nation's Top 20.

GW will play four games at the two-day Princeton Invitational this weekend. The Colonials open with No. 8 Pacific at 11:30 am on Saturday, followed by a rematch with Iona at 7:00 pm. GW will battle the host and 16th-ranked Tigers at 1:20 pm Sunday before rounding out the event versus Fordham at 4:00 pm.
