BRIDGEPORT, PA - George Washington senior goalkeeper Chris Whittam was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Co-Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Whittam keyed the Colonials to four straight victories at the Princeton Invitaitonal last weekend, including an upset of 17th-ranked Santa Clara.
GW improved to 5-2 on the season with its four-game sweep at the Princeton Invite, highlighted by Whittam's 31 saves, including two penalty blocks, nine steals and four assists. The 6-1 senior made seven saves, including a penalty block, and had five steals as the Colonials upset No. 17 Santa Clara, 9-8, in overtime on Saturday.
Whittam also had a penalty block, 11 saves and two assists in GW's 10-4 victory over Fordham, which avenged a 12-4 season-opening loss to the Rams. Whittam also added five saves in an 11-6 victory over Queens (NY) on Saturday and eight stops in Sunday's 15-11 win against Iona.
Whittam, who split the weekly honor with Princeton's Zach Beckmann, now has 568 career saves, 41 behind Chris Blick for second place all-time in program history.
