Tyner Claims Second Straight CWPA Rookie of the Week Award
Freshman Utility Wins Back-to-Back Awards With Nine-Goal, 16-Point Weekend
Sept. 15, 2010
BRIDGEPORT, PA - George Washington freshman utility Daniel Tyner was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Rookie of the Week for the second straight week Tuesday after totaling nine goals and seven assists for the Colonials at the Princeton Invitational.
Tyner is the second Colonials' player to earn multiple Rookie of the Week awards in as many seasons after goalkeeper Cameron Illes won the Sept. 7 and Sept. 21 awards in 2009. Tyner earned the honor last week after scoring 11 goals, 16 points and 10 ejections drawn at the season-opening Navy Open.
Over the weekend in Princeton, Tyner finished with nine goals on 9-of-23 shooting with seven assists, four steals and three ejections drawn as the Colonials finished the weekend 1-3 with a victory over Iona (12-11) and losses to No. 13 Santa Clara (14-4), Fordham (8-6) and Harvard (9-8).
Against Iona, he netted five goals, including the game-winning five-meter penalty shot with 14 seconds left, and added two steals with an ejection drawn and a steal. He added another seven-point performance - his third in his first eight collegiate games - with three goals and four assists against Harvard.
Tyner currently leads GW with 20 goals, 12 assists and 13 ejections drawn through eight games.
GW (3-5) returns to action Friday at the ECAC Championship on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. The No. 9 seed Colonials face No. 8 seed Iona at 3:00 pm, with the winner moving on to face top-seeded Bucknell Saturday at 9:00 am.
