Deasey Captures CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Week
Freshman Attack Netted Game-Winner in Victory Over Bucknell
Sept. 28, 2010
BRIDGEPORT, PA - George Washington freshman attack Paul Deasey was chosen Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Rookie of the Week Tuesday. Additionally, sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Illes and freshman utility Daniel Tyner were named to the league's Defensive Player and Player of the Week honor rolls, respectively.
Deasey totaled three goals, seven assists and three steals to help the Colonials split their home games against Bucknell and No. 17 Princeton last weekend.
In Saturday's 10-7 victory over Bucknell, Deasey scored two goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 7:07 remaining, to help GW snap a 14-game skid in conference play. He added three assists, three steals and two ejections drawn against the Bison.
On Sunday against No. 17 Princeton, Deasey contributed a game-high four assists, along with a goal and two ejections drawn in a 13-9 loss to the Tigers.
Deasey's selection marks the third time in the season's first four weeks that a GW freshman has earned the league's Southern Division Rookie of the Week award. Tyner, who amassed eight goals, five assists, seven steals and six ejections drawn this past weekend, previously picked up the award on September 7 and 15.
Illes made 19 saves, including seven stops and no goals allowed in the fourth quarter of Saturday's victory over Bucknell, and added a steal for the Colonials over the weekend.
GW (5-9, 1-1 CWPA Southern Division, East Region) returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 8:00 pm when it hosts Navy at Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
