Destici, Petkovic Make CWPA Honor Roll
The duo led No. 17 GW to a pair of wins over the weekend
After leading GW to a 2-1 record last weekend with wins over Wagner and Fordham, and a close loss to then-No. 13 Bucknell, freshman Atakan Destici and redshirt senior Bogdan Petkovic earned accolades from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).
Destici was named to the Mid-Atlantic honor roll for both Rookie of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, while Petkovic was named to the Player of the Week honor roll.
A freshman from Istanbul, Turkey, Destici tallied 19 goals on the weekend. He registered eight goals to lead GW to a 16-9 win over league-rival Wagner, doing much of his damage in the first half when he scored five times as the Colonials cruised to a 10-0 halftime lead. In the nightcap Saturday, he scored another six goals while adding four assists and also leading the team with six steals and two ejections drawn, as GW beat Fordham 18-6.
Destici capped the weekend with a five-goal performance in Sunday's 16-11 loss to No. 13 Bucknell. In addition to his 19 goals in three games, he totaled 11 steals, six assists, five ejections drawn and three field blocks.
Petkovic anchored a defensive effort that yielded just six goals to Fordham, and nine goals to Wagner. He also provided a punch to GW’s offensive attack with nine assists and seven goals, and finished the weekend with six steals, four ejections drawn and two field blocks.
The 17th-ranked Colonials are back in action on Sunday, with a pair of games at Fordham and Wagner.
