Men's Water Polo Swept At North-South Invitational
PRINCETON, NJ (Oct. 1, 2001) - George Washington men's water polo dropped to 3-7 following a tough weekend at the North-South Invitational in Princeton, NJ.
GW fell to Massachusetts 14-3 in their first match of the tournament, as the Minutemen shutout the Colonials in the first half while building an 8-0 lead at the break. Senior Kevin Norman scored two of GW's goals with senior Josh Gimpelson adding the third.
Queens jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter in GW's second match. The Colonials would recover to pull within three after the third quarter, 10-7. However, GW was unable to close the gap any further, losing 13-7. Senior Spencer Hugret led the Colonials' attack with three scores.
On Sunday, September 30, the Colonials faced Iona in a morning match. The Gaels pulled away 5-1 at the half, a deficit the shorthanded Colonials could not overcome, eventually losing their third match, 9-4.
In their final match of the invitational the Colonials played a tough Harvard squad. Five different Colonials scored, in a hard-fought match. Harvard would prove to have too many weapons, winning 13-5. Patrick Dodge scored two goals to lead the Colonials in the losing effort.
GW travels to Baltimore, MD to face Johns Hopkins in their next match on Friday, October 5, at 7:00 p.m. The Colonials then return home to host Navy at Smith Center the following day at 7:00 p.m.
