BUFF OUT! Men's Water Polo Returns to Smith Center Pool Thursday
Oct. 7, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC - Fans are encouraged to wear Buff to watch the George Washington men's water polo team christen newly renovated Charles E. Smith Center Pool this Thursday at 7:30 pm against 17th-ranked Bucknell. The student organization with the highest attendance and most Buff will receive $200 courtesy of Colonials Challenge.
After opening the season with 21 games away from home, GW (7-14, 0-2 CWPA Southern Division) welcomes the nationally ranked Bison for a CWPA Southern Division contest at Smith Center Pool, which received numerous enhancements, including new lighting and chair-back seating, as part of the building's renovation.
Senior John-Claude Wright leads GW and ranks in the Top 5 nationally with 48 goals, followed by sophomore Cray Rogers' 32 goals and senior Nick Archambault's 21. Freshmen goalkeeper Cameron Illes is also among the national leaders with 163 saves in 67 quarters played.
The Colonials split their four contests against the Bison last season, including an 11-9 victory in the teams' most recent meeting at Smith Center last September, a win that snapped GW's 10-game conference losing streak. Bucknell has won both meetings with GW so far this season.
No. 17 Bucknell (10-6, 4-1) had a six-game winning streak snapped with a 12-5 loss at No. 19 Princeton on Sunday to fall into a first-place tie with the Tigers in the CWPA Southern Division standings.
The Colonials will also host games at Smith Center Pool on Oct. 17, 28 and 31.
