#18 Men’s Water Polo Closes Regular Season at Hopkins, Navy
The Colonials will travel to Johns Hopkins on Friday and Navy on Saturday
WASHINGTON -- The 18th-ranked GW men’s water polo team is set to close its regular season slate with a pair of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference road clashes this weekend.
The Colonials (12-9, 7-1 MAWPC) will visit Johns Hopkins on Friday at 7 p.m. and Navy on Saturday at 7 p.m., a week after defeating both teams at home to improve to 7-1 in league play. With the MAWPC Championship set for Nov. 18-20, GW has assured itself of a top-two finish in the conference as it currently sits one-half game ahead of Bucknell (6-1) and three games ahead of Hopkins (3-4).
Bogdan Petkovic had a big hand in GW’s 12-11 win over the Blue Jays, and 15-7 thumping of the Midshipmen, scoring nine goals and adding seven assists in the two games. The redshirt senior was named MAWPC Player of the Week for his effort, marking the second time this season he’s earned the honor.
Petkovic, along with freshmen Atakan Destici and Andrew Mavis, and junior Pierce Deamer, have led a GW offensive attack that has averaged 11.2 goals per game. Destici leads the Colonials with 60 goals, Petkovic has 40, Deamer 35 and Mavis 31.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Matt Taylor owns a .533 save percentage with 162 saves against 142 goals. Destici leads the team with 62 steals and the Colonials are allowing 10.9 goals per game.
