GW Men's Water Polo Seeded Sixth for Southern Division Championship

Nov. 4, 2013

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The George Washington men's water polo team is seeded sixth for this weekend's Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championship, the league announced on Monday. The Colonials will face No. 11 Salem International on Friday at 7:40 p.m. in the tournament's first round at Navy's Lejeune Hall.

Seeding was based on the accumulated votes of the division's 12 head coaches.

Princeton, which won the Southern Division-East Region regular-season title and is ranked 13th in the nation, received all but one first-place vote to claim the top seed in the three-day tournament. Defending Southern Division champion Bucknell, the only team in the field to defeat Princeton in 2013, is seeded second, while Southern Division-West Region champion Mercyhurst is third.

Johns Hopkins and host Navy earned the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively, followed by GW at No. 6. Washington & Jefferson (7th), Gannon (8th), Notre Dame (Ohio) (9th), Monmouth College (10th), Salem International (11th) and Penn State-Behrend (12th) round out the field.

GW (12-11, 3-5 Southern) opened its season against Salem International at the Navy Open, routing the Tigers, 22-4. GW is 7-6 this season against the Southern Division Championship field.

The winner of Friday's GW/Salem International game will face Mercyhurst on Saturday at 11:40 a.m., while the loser will take on the loser of the Washington & Jefferson/Monmouth contest at 3:40 p.m.

The Southern Division Championship, which takes place from Nov. 8-10, will determine the six Southern Division teams which advance to the CWPA Championship, Nov. 22-24 at Brown University.
