GW Men's Water Polo Set for CWPA Southern Division Championship

SETTING THE STAGE: The George Washington men's water polo team heads to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, this weekend for the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championship. The three-day, 11-team event will take place from Nov. 6-8 at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
GW (4-19, 0-8 Southern) will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will take on No. 4 Navy on Friday at 4:50 p.m. and No. 9 Monmouth College at 8:50 p.m. in pool play. The remainder of the weekend's schedule will be determined by Friday's results.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: The tournament will determine the five Southern Division teams which will earn automatic bids to the CWPA Championship, which takes place Nov. 20-22 at MIT. The top five teams from the Southern Division Championship will compete against the top three teams from the Northern Division Championship, along with four at-large selections, for the league title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship.
LAST YEAR AT SOUTHERNS: GW placed fifth at the 2014 Southern Division Championship to earn an automatic bid to the CWPA Championship. The Colonials went 3-1 at Southerns with wins over Salem International, Gannon and Washington & Jefferson.
LAST TIME OUT: GW concluded the regular season with three games in two days Oct. 24-25. The Colonials defeated Iona, 17-13, but fell to Fordham and No. 12 Princeton.
UNDERCLASSMEN ON TOP: GW's freshmen and sophomores have accounted for more than 85 percent of GW's 229 goals this season, led by sophomore Pierce Deamer (55), who also paces the Colonials with 27 assists, 82 points and 43 ejections drawn on the year. Freshmen Brett Else is tops on the team with 42 steals and sophomore Noah McKinnie Braun has recorded a team-high 10 field blocks.
IN THE CAGE: Senior Connor Dillon ranks fifth all-time at GW with 555 career saves. He leads a quartet of Colonial goalkeepers with 112 saves on the year, while freshman Matt Taylor boasts 96 saves and a team-best .536 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN: Navy (11-9, 4-4 Southern), which is receiving votes in the most recent national poll, has won five of the last 10 Southern Division titles, most recently in 2013. The Midshipmen have dropped two in a row -- both to Princeton -- after winning the previous four contests. Carl Dowzicky leads Navy with 71 points on 45 goals and 26 assists, while goalkeeper Beau Bayless boasts 135 saves in the cage.
GW VS. NAVY: GW fell to Navy, 18-14, on Oct. 7 at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool, and 14-7 on Oct. 18 in Annapolis. Senior Jonah Dowd has scored six goals against the Midshipmen this season, while Deamer has tallied five goals and seven steals and Dillon has recorded 26 saves.
SCOUTING THE SCOTS: Monmouth (3-7, 2-3 Southern) took fifth at the CWPA Division III Championship after defeating Penn State-Behrend, 14-6, in the final game of the weekend. Raheem Brown, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, paces the Fighting Scots with 46 goals on the year.
GW VS. MONMOUTH: GW has never faced Monmouth College, which has been a varsity program since 2013.
