WASHINGTON, DC - (Nov. 5) Men's water polo made a strong showing this past weekend at the Southern Championships, posting a 3-1 record, and finishing in fifth-place.
George Washington (9-15) finished their season on a high-note, topping their three final opponents of the year. Unfortunately, the Colonials' fifth place finish failed to qualify them for the upcoming Eastern Championships with only the four top seeds earning a spot in the tournament.
On Friday, Nov. 2 GW faced their season-long nemesis, Bucknell, who entering the championship had won all three meetings between the two squads this year. Their opening round match would prove to be no different, as the Bison completed their season-sweep, upending the Colonials 12-6. Senior Josh Gimpelson led GW with three scores in the losing effort.
GW would win both Saturday matches on Nov. 3, breezing by Washington & Jefferson 13-7. Senior Spencer Hugret led the Colonials with four scores, as GW doubled the Presidents' scoring in the second half, 8-4.
In their second match of the day, GW dominated Grove City in a blowout, winning 17-5. Opening the match with a 6-2 first quarter, the Colonials never looked back, holding the Wolverines to three goals in the final three periods. Gimpelson led all scorers with five goals, with Hugret and sophomore Patrick Dodge netting four apiece.
On Sunday, Nov. 4 GW faced Slippery Rock for the fifth-place match. The Colonials and Rockets battled for four periods, with GW holding a slim one-goal lead heading into the final quarter. The Colonials would hang on to win 10-9, and earn a fifth place finish in the field of 15. Senior Kevin Norman led GW with three scores, while Dodge set a new team record, drawing nine kick outs for the match.
