GW's Petkovic Earns Second CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Week
Freshman Broke Program Single-Season Steals Record
Nov. 7, 2012
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – George Washington men’s water polo freshman Bogdan Petkovic was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced on Tuesday.
Petkovic led GW to a 2-2 record and a sixth-place finish at last weekend’s CWPA Southern Division Championship. He tied for a team-high 16 goals and added team bests of 21 steals and five field blocks. Two of his goals came on man-up opportunities, and he added an assist, two ejections drawn and a penalty drawn.
Petkovic led the team with four goals and six steals in the Colonials’ 13-12 sudden-death loss to Bucknell in the opener. The Belgrade, Serbia, native followed up with a team-high five goals, five steals and two field blocks in a 15-10 win over Washington & Jefferson, then notched a hat trick to go along with a pair of steals in GW’s 18-11 victory over Gannon. Petkovic then recorded four goals, two blocks and a career-high eight steals in a 16-15 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins in the season finale.
Petkovic concluded his impressive rookie campaign with a single-season program record 96 steals while ranking third on the team with 45 goals, 24 assists and 69 points. In addition, the central defender posted a team-high 18 field blocks on the year, the third-highest single-season total in school history.
The Rookie of the Week award is the second of Petkovic’s career, as he also earned the honor on Sept. 4.
