GW Men's Water Polo Seeded Eighth for CWPA Championship
Colonials Will Face No. 9 Fordham in First Round on Friday, Nov. 21
Nov. 11, 2014
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The George Washington men's water polo team is seeded eighth for next weekend's CWPA Championship hosted by Navy. The Colonials will face ninth-seeded Fordham in the tournament's first game on Friday, Nov. 21, at 10 a.m.
Northern Division champion and 11th-ranked Brown is the top seed in the 12-team tournament, which takes place from Nov. 21-23 at Navy's LeJeune Hall, while Southern Division champ and ninth-ranked Princeton is the No. 2 seed. Northern and Southern Division runners-up Harvard and Bucknell - ranked 19th and 12th nationally - earned the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds, respectively. Defending CWPA champion and 17th-ranked St. Francis (5th), Navy (6th), Johns Hopkins (7th) and GW (8th) also earned automatic berths, while Fordham (9th), MIT (10th), Iona (11th) and Washington & Jefferson (12th) round out the field as at-large teams.
The top six seeds were based on the top three finishing teams at each division championship, while Johns Hopkins and GW, the fourth- and fifth-place finishers from the Southern Division, were guaranteed slots in the field but fell into the mix with the four at-large teams for seeding between Nos. 7-12. The at-large picks were selected by the CWPA Varsity Governance Council.
The winner of the CWPA Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
GW placed seventh at the 2013 CWPA Championship. Prior to last season, the Colonials last advanced to the league tournament in 2007 when they placed third for the program's best-ever finish.
GW (12-12) edged Fordham (14-17) by a score of 8-7 on Sept. 13 in the teams' only meeting this season.
The winner of Friday's GW/Fordham game will face Brown on Friday at 3:20 p.m., while the loser will take on the loser of the St. Francis/Washington & Jefferson match on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
